Baltimore Carnival 2022: Revelers adorned in costumes and dirty mass (color paint) with bystanders proudly representing their countries and also their unique expressions of self.
Carnival unites thousands of people in music and dance along the streets of many countries all over the world, including popular celebrations in countries such as Trinidad and Tobago, and Brazil . The celebrations in these countries are extravagant and have inspired many other carnivals throughout the Caribbean and many cities such as New York, Miami and Baltimore. Carnival is a spectacular parade of colors and artistry - costumes and floats/bands - with hypnotic pulsating rhythms. Preparing for Carnival takes months of planning, including designing and crafting of the striking costumes dressed in feathers, jewels and more. An expression of freedom deeply rooted in history and cultural traditions.
Cochabamba, Bolivia - I experienced a wonderful cultural display in Bolivia many years ago and was quite drawn to the similarities between their traditions and that of the Caribbean region, where I grew up. It made me reflect on the strong traditions of African and indigenous peoples that continue in many celebrations all over the world.
